Wigan Warriors fullback Sam Tomkins' hat-trick try against Wakefield has earned him the fifth IRN-BRU Try Award of the 2012 Super League season.

Sky sports expert Jon Wells selected his top ten tries from rounds 20-23 before awarding it to Tomkins for his impressive touchdown away from home at the Belle Vue Stadium.

Speaking about the try, Wells said: "Throughout the last three rounds there have been some magnificent tries, but the IRN-BRU Try Award for rounds 20 to 23 lands in the lap of Sam Tomkins, an individual whose reputation grows with each game we see him play.

"The try itself was Sam's hat-trick on the day, set up beautifully with a neat little chip over the defensive line from Sean O'Loughlin. Quick-thinking, great skill and timing and a little bit of flair does the rest as Tomkins rounds off a fantastic performance. Its pieces of individual skill and flair like this that underline the England fullback's status as one of the Super Leagues best players.

"A tough decision this month, but a much deserved winner nonetheless."

Tomkins received his trophy from Super League legend Paul Sculthorpe at the Warriors' training ground, along with a cheque for £200 to donate to a charity of his choice. The fullback opted to split the proceeds to Joining Jack - a charity founded by rugby player Andrew Johnston dedicated to finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular dystrophy - and the Special Baby Care Unit at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan.

On receiving his award Tomkins said: "Getting a hat-trick of tries in any game is a great feeling and being able to pick up this award for one them is a real bonus.

"As a team we have been playing consistently well, there has been the occasional blip, but we are in a great position. Consistency is what the team strive for and because of this I think it has brought my game on too.

"For myself, I'll continue to play my best and hopefully score as many as I can. Winning the IRN-BRU Try Award is a real bonus."
