The Wigan Warriors Sports College is very proud to report on the fantastic progress and continued achievements of one our Level 3 Diploma students.

Charlie Bowling is a local Wigan lad with huge aspirations and the sporting talent to match, competing on the National and International stage gaining honors at Elite Great Britain Senior Level Wrestler and as a Junior Champion.

17 year old Charlie explained his background and wrestling career so far,

"I have a long standing love of wrestling. I have wrestled competitively for 12 years, trained hard, competed and won large international competitions throughout the UK and Europe. My current training regime is 4 to 5 times a week that allows me to improve my own level of skill and fitness, levels that I feel are progressing year on year.

"The fact that I have been able to continue such a demanding and time-consuming hobby I feel shows my dedication and commitment to something which I have a passion for. I have been selected and competed on the international stage for Great Britain in Latvia, France, Lithuania, Austria and I was selected to wrestle in the European Cadet Championships in Poland.

Charlie has also recently had the on hour of being involved in his nations squad for the Commwealth Games.

He continued,

"This year I have been added to the England Squad competing at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games where i will be involved as a training partner for the English athletes. I have also been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in Poland. In July I will be travelling to Canada to compete in the Canada Cup against competitors from all across the globe.

"I have had great success on the mat this year winning a gold medal in the Kwiks international in Belgium and Aspull international (England). I have also won a silver medal in the English Junior Championships and a bronze medal at the British Senior Championships. Winning these medals in these tournaments have been a massive achievement for me as I'm the youngest in my division fighting against seniors.

"My future goal is to wrestling in the commonwealth games and Olympics but this can't be realistically done without financial support. To fund my tournament, training and camps I need to work to find money to pay for this. The time I spend working I could be training and at an elite level the more time you spend training the better you become!"

Kevin Perry, the Head of Education at Wigan Warriors said;

"We are extremely proud of Charlie and what he has achieved so far in his wrestling career and at such a young age too. During my time in education and working with so many types of students from different backgrounds, I am hard pressed to find a more mature, respectful, dedicated and skilled young man, not just towards his career ambition in wrestling but also towards his studies here at our sports college.

"It is fantastic to have a young ‘Elite Level Athlete' studying at the Warriors Sports College based at Central Park. Through his course Charlie has full access to our 1st team player training facilities, including the Wrestle Pit and Performance Gym to support his development. He is a real inspiration to our other students towards achieving their life goals, something I know they respond well too. We will continue to help shape his academic studies alongside supporting his progression to becoming world champion is his sport"

Charlie is looking to a secure main Sponsor or range of sponsors who can offer financial support with his training and competition costs. If you would like to help a local lad achieve on the world stage, please contact Charlie direct at or call 07947117971. Alternatively you can contact Kevin Perry at
