Wigan Warriors V Catalans Dragons
engage Super League XIII Round 11

L24 - 26

Wigan were denied the two points with a last minute try from the Dragons as the French side sneaked to a 24-26 win on Friday night.

Dane Carlaw with the try in the corner from a Bosc kick in the dying seconds which resulted in the Warriors first home defeat since May of 2007 as the Catalans stretched to a six game unbeaten run.

Wigan made one change from the side that won at Leeds with Liam Colbon moving to centre for the injured Darrell Goulding with Mark Calderwood in on the right wing. Still missing with a knee injury was stand off Trent Barrett.

The Catalans took the lead on 7 minutes with their first attack of the game; Clint Greenshields through a gap on the Wigan right hand side, Thomas Bosc added the conversion from out wide, 0-6.

The visitors added to their score through a 15th minute penalty, Bosc with the two points as a Dragons player was tackled without the ball.

After a slow start, Wigan finally got into gear and responded with a well worked try on 26 minutes. Quick hands from right to left, Paleaaesina, Tomkins, Carmont to Pat Richards who dived in at the corner. The winger missed the extras, 4-8.

The Warriors almost broke away down the middle with six minutes of the half left, Paleaaesina to O’Carroll but his pass to Mark Calderwood who broke free was judged forward by referee Ashley Klein.

Wigan narrowed the gap to just two points as Richards struck a 37th minute penalty as the Catalans were penalised 30 metres out. Just before the interval the visitors were penalised again for indiscipline in the tackle, 8-8.

At the other end the Dragons kicked a penalty, 8-10 at the interval.

Wigan took the lead in the opening seven minutes of the second half, Leuluai with a short pass to send in Eamon O’Carroll for his first try for the first team. Richards added the conversion, 14-10.

A wayward Catalans pass allowed the cherry and whites in for their third try, Carmont with the kick on and he re-gathered the ball to touch down. The conversion from under the posts was struck by Richards, 20-10 and all of a sudden the Warriors had opened up an advantage.

The French side hit back on 57 minutes, Justin Murphy in for the try and with Bosc accurate with the goal the score was reduced to 20-16.

On 65 minutes Wigan were in for try number four and Richards second of the night to bring up his 500 point tally for the Club. Thomas Leuluai with a perfect grubber kick through, Richards himself missed the goal, 24-16.

Jerome Guisset scored with five minutes left for the Catalans and with a Bosc conversion it made it 24-22.

In the dying moments a kick from Bosc to the corner was taken by Dane Carlaw and the visitors had snatched a late late win. The conversion was missed but it hardly mattered as the Dragons picked up the two Super League points.
