On a bitterly cold afternoon which saw the official opening of the Leigh Sports Village, Wigan Warriors ran out comfortable 0-32 winners in their final run out ahead of the new Super League season.
The Warriors head into the new campaign on the back of three friendly victories and Sunday’s win over the Centurions was hard fought despite the six try to nil outcome.
It took the Warriors just two minutes to open their points account, Tim Smith with a long pass out to the left and Pat Richards was able to touch down in the corner. Richards added from out wide to make it 0-6.
Wigan continued to press and were rewarded with their second try on 14 minutes. This time it was the power of Paleaaesina close to the Leigh line as he stretched over. Richards made it two from two and the Warriors led 0-12.
Leigh forced two goal line drop outs and for a spell mid way through the half the Warriors had to show keen defensive skills. A wayward Leigh pass intercepted by Pat Richards relieved any danger to the visitor’s line.
On the half an hour mark a loose Leigh ball was picked up by Cameron Phelps who raced away. The winger was caught 10 metres out but quick Wigan hands to the left enabled Andy Coley to cross for Wigan’s third try. This time the extras were missed, 0-16 and that’s how it stayed until the interval.
Within five minutes of the restart Wigan were in again, this time it was Thomas Leuluai who spotted a gap from acting half back to cross under the sticks. Pat Richards was able to convert to make it 0-22.
On 48 the visitors were in again this time individual skill from Skipper Sean O’Loughlin for the cherry and whites for try number five, a simple conversion for Richards under the sticks, 0-28.
The Warriors completed their scoring on 68 minutes through a Phil Bailey touchdown, this time the goal was missed and the game ended 0-32.
