Sam Tomkins says his love for the Wigan Club helped sway his decision to return to the Cherry and Whites.

Tomkins returns to the DW Stadium in 2016 to start his second spell at the Warriors following a two-year spell with New Zealand Warriors.

The 26-year-old full-back left Wigan at the end of 2013 after Grand Final glory at Old Trafford against Warrington.

Speaking about his return to Wigan ahead of the start of the season, Tomkins said: “This club means a lot to me and I couldn’t turn down the chance to come back, I love it here.

“I went to New Zealand for a new challenge, to do something different. I really did enjoy it there and made some mates for life but when I spoke with people here I realised that the time was right to come back.

“I watched on as a fan and that was horrible, to see the lads go so close in the last two Grand Finals was really frustrating. The lads have been really close to silverware and are ready to win some now, we’ve missed it and we’re due some!”

“To spend two years away from your family and friends who you usually see every day, from the place you love is hard. I feel like I’ve made the right choice in coming back.”

He added: “I feel like I learnt a lot from my time away, it was a learning curve playing in a different team and competition but I’m happy with how it went. I had to adapt my game in the NRL and hopefully I can bring some of that back to Wigan.”

Although Tomkins spent two-years away from the Club he tuned in for almost every game and followed the team closely during his time down under.

“I watched on as a fan and that was horrible, to see the lads go so close in the last two Grand Finals was really frustrating. The lads have been really close to silverware and are ready to win some now, we’ve missed it and we’re due some!”

Updating fans on his progress following knee surgery, Tomkins said: “The recovery is going well. There’s no date set in stone yet to be honest, we’re just aiming for some time in April. I can’t wait to get back out there playing at the DW, I’ve really missed playing for Wigan.”

Sam Tomkins is back at the DW in 2016, will you be? The Warriors begin their 2016 season in just one week’s time when they face Catalans Dragons at the DW Stadium.
