  • Shaun Wane says Wigan beaten by the better team

  • Reaction as Wigan lose 10-40 against Warrington

  • Wane focuses on positives after defeat

Wigan Warriors Head Coach Shaun Wane held his hands up after the game and admitted Wigan had been beaten by the better team.

The Warriors went down to a 40-10 defeat to Warrington who in turn pulled clear of Wigan at the top of Super League.

Speaking to Wigan TV after the game, Wane said: “I thought we were good in the first 25 minutes and the better team and then they kicked us to death. They got us in the corner and had good line speed so we couldn’t get out of our end. Then we gave them a few penalties that they scored off and they just played the field position better than we did.

Sometimes you’ve got hold your hands up and say you were beaten by the better team. They were very good but we’ll meet them again later in the season and we’ll be stronger and hopefully we’ll have our day.”

Wane admitted it was great to have George Williams back but Ben Flower missed the game with a tight hamstring.

Continuing, he said: “I saw some good signs, some toughness, we didn’t give in against a team that are playing red hot and we are under the pump.

“Overall hats off to them they were very good.”

Wane said he wasn’t worried at the nature of the defeat, instead he reflected on the positives that with seven players still missing the Warriors still sit in third in the Super League table.

“Let’s be real about it,” he said. “We’ve got some good players not playing at the moment. The players that are taking to the field have played a lot of games and I’m proud of their effort. As a club we’re in a good place, you look at who is in that dressing room at the end that aren’t playing and we’ll be ok.

“Considering the injuries we’ve had we’re challenging Warrington to go top tonight and it’s a good effort.”

Looking ahead to next week, he said:

“We’re back in on Bank Holiday Monday showing the players the review of this game and then we’ll work on some detail for Dewsbury and go there, show them the respect they deserve and make sure we’ll be ready for that game.”
