Wane Wants Headache

  • Shaun Wane welcomes back Dom Manfredi

  • Winger set to feature for Wigan Reserves this weekend

  • Wane wants Manfredi to add to competition in the backs

Shaun Wane has welcomed Dom Manfredi back and asked the Wigan winger to give him a selection headache.

Manfredi, a member of the 2016 Super League Dream Team, has been out for almost a complete calendar year after injuring his knee in a game at Castleford.

The Leigh-born flyer will feature for Wigan Reserves this weekend when they travel to St Helens on Saturday.

With Joe Burgess and Tom Davies currently occupying the wing spots and Liam Marshall having enjoyed a strong season Wane says he’s delighted to add Manfredi into the mix.

“I’m very pleased to have him back,” he said.

“He’s been in a tough place but he’s over it now. He’s an outstanding player. If he kills it on Saturday and I see some good signs then he’s up for selection the week after.

“To have him back, and get some pressure on team-selection is great for us.”

That said, Wane admits he has been impressed with Tom Davies who bagged two tries in the defeat to Leeds last weekend.

Continuing, Wane said:

“Tom was great, he had no right to make the metres he did. I’m very happy with him and particularly with his yardage coming out of our end.

“Tom is very impressive in how he trains, he’s very professional with the way he lives his life too. He’s just carried on doing what he did with our Under-19s, he runs hard and is very competitive and he’s seeing the benefits now. The world’s his oyster and he can be as good as he wants.”

Sam Powell returns from suspension this week in place of Josh Ganson as Wane makes just the one change for the visit of Huddersfield.

Tom Davies has impressed Wane with his recent form

On Friday’s opponents, Wane said:

“They’re a good team and I think we were lucky with the draw over there, we weren’t the best team that day. They’ve hit some form of late and did a great job on Wakefield last week. Their backs are very strong and that’s what we’ve shown the players this week. We need to be more physical than we were against Leeds.

“Jordan Turner is a great player, he’ll be a great asset to them and they’ve got some strong middles who carry the ball well too.

“We’ve had two draws (this season), there’s not much in us so it’s got the makings of a great game.”
