  • Oliver Gildart named in Italy train-on squad for Rugby League World Cup

  • Gildart joins squad after enjoying fine Super League season

  • Squad to be reduced to 24 players ahead of World Cup

Wigan’s Oliver Gildart has been named in Italy’s train-on squad for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Gildart, 21, has enjoyed a fine season with the Warriors and was recently shortlisted for the 2017 Super League Young Player of the Year. He qualifies for Italy owing to his Italian grandfather.

The squad, which will be reduced to 24 players before 13 October, is drawn from players in Australia, England and France, as well as the domestic Italian competition.

Gildart is joined by Super League players Mark Minichello (Hull FC) and Shannon Wakeman (Huddersfield Giants) whilst NRL stars James Tedesco, Paul Vaughan, Nathan Brown, Aidan Guerra, Daniel Alvaro and Josh Aloiai are all included.

Of the 19 Italy-based players, the one most likely to be in the final squad for the World Cup is dual code international Mirco Bergamasco, who played 89 rugby union Tests, including three Rugby World Cups.

Bergamasco, who has represented the Azzurri in four league Tests, has also played rugby union in France for Stade Français and Racing Métro.

The Rugby League World Cup takes place in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea this winter.
