Wigan’s newest recruit Gabe Hamlin says he hopes to make two familiar faces proud as he begins life with the Warriors.

Hamlin, 20, joined up with his new teammates on Monday as the 2018 pre-season began.

Recently recruited from South Sydney Rabbitohs, Hamlin was recommended to the Warriors by both Pat Richards and Michael Maguire.

Speaking to Wigan TV, Hamlin said: “Paddy Richards was my assistant coach last year at Souths, he helped me out a lot and he recommended Wigan as a very good club. I listened to him and trusted him and so far it’s been going pretty well. Hopefully I can have a good pre-season and make him and Madge proud.

“I could have stayed at home but I thought about it and thought that a fresh start somewhere else would be good. If I was to move away from home then I may as well come here to a different country and travel, it’s a good change and I’m half-British anyway so I may as well see what the other side of my family is like.”

A prop forward who is known for his pace and footwork, he says the opportunity to work with Shaun Wane was one he was really looking forward to.

“I just want to learn off Shaun (Wane),” he said.

“He’s one of the main reasons I came here due to him being such a good player.

“I’ve not had chance to really sit down with him just yet but I’m looking forward to doing that, having a chat with him and getting some feedback so I can really learn from that.

“I’m not the biggest or tallest player but I pride myself on my speed and footwork. I’m not the type to run over people but hopefully I can get in between them and get past them.”

With Wigan set to face his former club in February, Hamlin says he is determined to make the squad for that one.

“I’m really happy about us going out there as my family have all got tickets so I’d love to get a run-out in that one. It’ll be good to promote Super League down there too.

“I just want to see how I’m going really, I’ll set myself mini goals as we go throughout pre-season and then hopefully get a shot.”
