2017 World Champions
As 2017 draws to a close and 2018 edges ever closer we take a look back on the year that was and look forward to the year ahead.
The Warriors Academy enjoyed another fine season in 2017 with the Under-19s losing just two league games all season.
After easing past Catalans in the semis, a Grand Final at the DW Stadium against Castleford was all that stood in the way of another title.
Having won seven of the previous nine Academy competitions, it’s fair to say Wigan have totally dominated youth development in British Rugby League in recent years.
The Wigan fans turned out in force for the Under-19s and they didn’t have long to wait for the first try as James Worthington scored with the first attack of the game.
A Jack Wells double and one from Sam Grant meant Wigan were in command midway through at 20-6.
Having had a player sent to sin bin, Castleford conceded again as Josh Ganson raced over.
And further tries from Josh Woods and Callum Field saw the Warriors claim a comfortable 37-12 win to the delight of the fans inside in the DW Stadium.
It was sheer jubilation all round for the Wigan players at the final whistle.
Having won the award himself in 2013, George Williams was on hand to present Josh Ganson with the Man of the Match trophy.
