Wigan Warriors are supporting the NHS Blood and Transplant by helping them to get the message out for blood donors to keep their appointments to donate over Christmas.

Christmas is a time when hospital stocks can run low and donors who keep their appointments can make a real difference.

Joanne Leeman, Donor Marketing Operations Coordinator for Lancashire said:

“Providing life-saving blood and platelets to patients across the country doesn’t stop over Christmas. With the help of our amazing donors, we need to ensure that patients across England continue to get the appropriate blood and platelets they need. With the weather getting worse, people finding themselves busy with the festive break and the rise in colds and bugs, giving blood and platelets slips off the nation’s to-do lists. All blood groups are being asked to make and keep their life saving appointment over the Christmas period, but we particularly need vulnerable groups like O-neg, B-neg and A-neg platelets. We need more donors from these groups to come forward - black donors are especially likely to have rare blood types.”

Paul MacLeod Wigan Warriors Marketing Manager added.

“The Warriors are delighted to be able to help NHS Blood and Transplant. Blood donation is so vital to saving lives and, with donation appointments to be held at the DW over Christmas, we want to help get the message out for donors to keep their appointments. It’s a fitting partnership as ‘It’s In Our Blood’, taken from the popular fans chant, features in our season ticket campaign which is active over the Christmas period”.

Blood Donation appointments are to be held at the DW Stadium on Thursday 28th December from 10am until 12.40pm and from 2pm until 3.55pm. If donors are unable to make appointments they are also being asked to let the blood service know as it may be that someone else could take their place. You can contact NHS Blood and Transplant service at blood.co.uk or on 0300 123 2323.
