Wary of Widnes

  • Shaun Wane says Warriors won’t underestimate Vikings

  • Wigan due for first game at DW Stadium in 2018

  • Wigan face Widnes Vikings at the DW Stadium on Friday 2 March

Shaun Wane says the Warriors won’t underestimate Widnes ahead of the teams facing off at the DW Stadium.

The Vikings finished bottom of the table after 23 rounds last year but rallied in the Qualifiers to finish second and retain their Super League status.

Denis Betts’ side are third in the table so far having won two of their opening four games.

Wane has watched all of their matches so far and says Wigan need to be on their game. “They played well at Castleford and against Leeds,” he said.

“They’re flying at the minute and are very confident. The games they’ve lost this year they could have won so we won’t be underestimating them. They always play well when they come to the DW.”

Widnes head to the DW having beaten Leeds last week

On the inclement weather that has wreaked havoc with this weekend’s Super League schedule, Wane said:

“We’ve struggled to get out on the field but that’s the same for every team I’m sure. We got enough skill work into the players whilst in Australia to last us a few months so we’re in a good place.

“I’m expecting an improved performance and for us to put more pressure on Widnes than we did Warrington. If we do that and get ourselves into some good field position then we can test anybody.”

Wigan run out at the DW for the first time in 2018 and Wane says the team are determined to put on a performance for the fans.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he added.

“It’s been five months since we played at home. The fans turned out in force at Warrington and Salford and a number of them travelled to Australia too so it’s our chance to thank them.”
