Warriors Announce New Community Project

Wigan Warriors today announced a new six-figure sponsorship deal with Tesco and Sportsmatch to take rugby league back to its grass roots through a brand new community project.

The new Warriors Schools Outreach programme, ‘Lesson For Life’, which has been sponsored by Tesco, was announced today at Highfield C of E Primary School in Wigan.

Warriors stars swapped the hallowed turf of the JJB Stadium for the school playground, joining children from all the primary school in the Borough at the launch event. As part of the celebrations, the Warriors Community Team and a selection of children demonstrated the activities from the Tesco Lesson for Life programme.

As part of the event, the Wigan Warriors Community Team also announced that they had been awarded Sportsmatch funding based on the new Tesco sponsorship deal.

The joint funding has enabled Wigan Warriors to develop a new programme, which provides local schools with the opportunity to become involved with rugby league at grass roots level. By increasing the interest of local children in the game of rugby league, Wigan Warriors aim to increase the number of children who play rugby league, increase the quality of young rugby league players and increase the club’s fan base by participation.

Sportsmatch is a government funded scheme set up to help fund grass roots and community sports in England, and they will match the Tesco funding pound for pound to enable the Warriors Lesson for Life programme to be delivered across Wigan and surrounding areas.
