Warriors Team Up With Primary Care Trust

Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust and Wigan Warriors have teamed up in an innovative health partnership to promote key health messages and raise awareness of important local health issues.

It is widely acknowledged that the overall state of the health of the local population in Wigan Borough is not good, and many PCT initiatives and developments are already well underway to tackle this. Wigan Warriors are now working with the PCT to help drive these messages home.

Powerful health messages and contact details are being promoted in match day programmes for the Warriors home games, as well as key information on the Warriors scoreboard. These have included to date:

  • Alcohol Awareness
  • Sexual Health
  • Healthy Eating
  • Find and Treat (screening programme for heart disease and stroke)
  • Skin Care
  • Organ Donor Register
  • Cancer Awareness
In addition, the Warriors website home page has been linked to the PCT website to continue to raise awareness of important local health issues.

Both parties see this as a dedicated and long-term partnership and will jointly be looking at other opportunities to work together.

Peter Rowe, Chief Executive of the PCT said: "We are delighted to have teamed up with the Warriors in this very exciting and innovative partnership. We all know that the state of the health of the local population isn’t all that good, so between us we are gearing up to help tackle these issues head on."

Wigan Warriors Head Coach, Brian Noble, commented: "Health issues are important to everyone and we are pleased to be able to work with the PCT to promote key health messages to the people of the Borough. You don’t have to be a finely tuned athlete to look after yourself, by sticking to some basic rules you can still lead a healthy lifestyle."
