Behind the Sticks - Derby Day

After last weeks fantastic win against Leeds Rhinos, Wigan head to St Helens...

St Helens v Wigan Warriors

Last weeks Big One against Leeds Rhinos had absolutely everything, even more so if you are a Wigan Warriors fan. A good hard rugby league battle played in front of a huge crowd that was ultimately decided by some wonderful entertaining rugby league tries.

There is no doubt in the first half last week Wigan had to show the grit and determination to stay in the game as the Rhinos had the lions share of possession and territory. After half time Wigan were awesome, with a near 100% completion rate there was only ever going to be one winner.

Again it will be so heart warming to the loyal Warriors fans to see home grown stars such as the Tomkins brothers and Lee Mossop playing such leading roles in an ever improving Wigan side.

In fact this derby game will be littered with young talent on both sides with Saints having their own share of rising stars. In fact the ground should be packed out just to see the battle between Karl Eastmond and Sam Tomkins. It will be the first time since the 1980’s that England coach Tony Smith will have such a rich talent base to choose from in the half back department.

There is no doubt to me that whoever comes out on top of that half back battle could lead their team to another important Super League victory just one week before the Challenge Cup semi finals.

This is one of the most eagerly anticipated derby games in years and Saints will be out for revenge after the Murrayfield Magic defeat to the Warriors.

This game will be another Super League classic but I feel Wigan have the momentum going into this weekend andthat they will edge this wonderful match.

Winning Margin: Wigan to beat St Helens by 1-5 points.

1st Try Scorer: Cameron Phelps
