Rugby League underwent biggest change in 20 years in 2015, it didn’t disappoint
Every minute mattered in most dramatic of years for the sport
- All to play for in 2016
2015 saw Rugby League in the UK welcome a new dawn. An exciting new competition structure was unveiled that would see the biggest shake up of the sport in 20 years, it didn’t disappoint.
Three major trophies were on offer in 2015 and all three were keenly contested throughout the year.
From Wigan’s perspective, the Challenge Cup campaign was over before it really began as the Warriors went out in the early rounds to Hull Kingston Rovers.
A shock to some at the time, Rovers went on to display their finest form in the famous competition and would deservedly make the final only to lose out to Leeds.
The Warriors have a rich history in the Cup and will be looking to make amends in 2016.
After 23 rounds of the First Utility Super League the league then split with eight teams moving forwards into the Super Eights. The bottom four merged with the top four from the Kingstone Press Championship to create the Qualifiers.
The motto “every minute matters” had been used throughout the year and it was most definitely the case with so many keenly fought battles.
The League Leaders Shield would only be decided in the final seconds of the regular season, it looked to be on it’s way to the DW only for Ryan Hall to score with the last touch of the game to hand the plate to Leeds.
In the Qualifiers, Wakefield and Bradford met in a nail-biting million pound game that had everyone on the edge of their seats. The Wildcats eventually took the 24-16 win and claimed their place in Super League XXI.
The play-offs, now a straight semi-final then Grand Final, provided another three games of scintillating drama which climaxed at Old Trafford where Leeds saw off Wigan by just two points.
Having been so close in both the League and Grand Final, the Warriors will be desperate to go one better on both fronts in 2016. Every minute most certainly did matter in 2015 and it’s definitely all to play for next year!
