Wigan Warriors Under 19s Assistant Coach, Darrell Goulding, on Wigan’s 62-22 win against North East Thunder Regional Academy
Sam Grant stands out for Goulding
- ”We improved a lot on our attack this week” Darrell Goulding
Wigan Warriors Under 19s Assistant Coach Darrell Goulding said Wigan’s ‘improved attack’ was pleasing in their 62-22 win against North East Thunder Regional Academy.
Wigan, who only had 16 fit players available again, went into half-time with a healthy 28-12 lead thanks to tries from Tom Davies, James Worthington, Josh Woods and a brace from Kyle Shelford.
Tries from Macauley Davies, Sam Grant, Sammy Kibula, Ben Kilner, Dec O’Donnell and a further two from Worthington sealed a fine 62-22 win for the Warriors Academy.
“We improved a lot on our attack this week which was good to see.” Goulding said.
“It was a little bit frustrating at times. We had a few chances were we knocked-on over the line but I’m just pleased that we got our shape on and in the position to score tries.
“We conceded a few soft tries which we are not happy about but we have to give respect to North East, they certainly turned up and give us a good go.” he added.
The former Warrior was pleased to see some of the younger players in the side grabbing their opportunity with both hands: “Sometimes we forget how young some of these players are and some of them have not played much this year so this game will have done them good because they have had game time.
“The win is a big boost for the players, especially at this time of year. We will be entering the play-offs soon so to put so many points on the board and for our attack to be so crisp at times was pleasing.”
Goulding was full of praise for centre Sam Grant saying: “He has got a lot of skill about him. He is developing well here and it is another learning curve for him. He has come into a professional environment and it has taken a bit of time for him to learn that but he is going well and he is a promising player for us.”
