Joe Burgess happy with Wigan return
Warriors winger plays first game of pre-season since coming back to the Club
- Warriors beat Catalans 26-22 in Perpignan
Joe Burgess said he was happy with his 30-minute stint as he returned for Wigan’s pre-season win over Catalans.
The Warriors spent the week in France training ahead of the game before taking on a big Dragons side.
Burgess re-joins the Warriors ahead of the 2017 season after a year in the NRL and played his first game of pre-season after recovering from surgery.
Speaking to Wigan TV after the game, Burgess said:
“I felt comfortable, I was a bit gutted that I only did 30 minutes but I kind of knew that before the game. I’ve not done a full pre-season so it was just about getting me back into it.
“It was good to get over for the tries and I’ll just look to take that into the first game of the season now.
“I was hoping to play next week but obviously there’s no game now but I should be fine. A bit more fitness this week and then into the season we go.”
On the week in Southern France, he said: “It’s been good, we’ve done some team bonding which has been good. The weather hasn’t been the best but overall it’s been good.
“To be fair it wasn’t as cold as we thought it would be actually out there on the pitch it was actually quite dry and I think you could see that with the amount offloads that were going on.”
Burgess will play alongside former school teammate Oliver Gildart once again in 2017 and added: “I got a few opportunities before I left to play alongside him and now I think we’re both a bit more mature as players so hopefully it’ll work for us.”
