Warriors Women Launch

  • Warriors to create Women’s team to compete in 2018 Women’s Super League
  • Official launch event takes place at DW Stadium
  • Sky Sports Reporter Angela Powers and Former GB Athlete Jenny Meadows in attendance

Thursday evening saw the Warriors officially launch their new Women’s team in style at the DW Stadium. The launch event was the first of a string of events as Wigan look to build up their newest team to compete in the 2018 Women’s Super League.

Over 130 people turned up on the night, which was hosted by Sky Sports’ Angela Powers. The evening included a special guest appearance from former Great British athlete, and Wigan’s own, Jenny Meadows. Also in attendance was the RFL’s Sarah-Jane Gray, Wigan first team players Oliver Gildart and Willie Isa, along with Amanda Wilkinson (pictured left, wit Sky Sports Jenna Brooks) overseeing the proceedings.

The event was held for all those wanting to get involved and to know more about the Women’s team. The evening was a great success, with some inspirational words spoken by the guests, and a great opportunity for potential players to network with the team’s staff.

Speaking after the event, Jenny Meadows, said: “I think it’s been really insightful and hopefully the message has got out there that if you have a clear mindset and commit to something that you want to do, then you can absolutely do it with the support of this club.”

The former 800m specialist, added: “Hopefully it’s an exciting time for a lot of people, getting involved in this. I’ve heard some great feedback just from tonight alone, the atmosphere in here is really exciting. Most of all it just made so much sense for Wigan to have a women’s team, in my eyes, so hopefully this can open a lot of doors for girls in Rugby League in the area.”

Head coach Amanda Wilkinson was amazed at the turn out at the DW, she said: “The event went really well, there was a lot rugby enthusiasts in the room and it was great to be able to give them an insight into our plans to grow and support the women’s and girls game. People stayed back to introduce themselves, and they all spoke positively about the opportunities they want to be a part of.”

Summarising, Amanda added: “I was overwhelmed by the amount of interest and enthusiasm to grow the game in Wigan by parents, coaches, women and girls all wanting to get involved. It was great to see so many young girls leaving the room with a smile on their face, feeling inspired and having a understanding of the opportunities within the Women and girls game.”

Further events in the Wigan Warriors Women’s calendar include three trial sessions for anyone wishing to try out for the team. These sessions will be held at Central Park from 10am-12pm on Saturday 25th November, Saturday 2nd December and Saturday 9th December. All potential players aged 16 or over are welcome but must register before attending.
