Improved Wigan Impress Wane

Shaun Wane said he was happy to see his side make improvements as they ran out 30-18 winners over Wakefield to move second in the table.

SW on the Wakefield and the game:

“They’re a solid team and very mature, they’re going to be hard to beat so it was a good win. They were always going to make it difficult for us.

“I thought we played well, we defended well. There was a bit of poor defence on the edges, some bad choices. We need to fix that for next week but I thought we looked solid against a good attacking team today.

“In our attack I think we got them a few times. Had we been a bit more clinical in attack and defence then that could have been a fair win for us.”

On Morgan Escaré playing at scrum-half:

“I want Morgan to go in the halves but I need more from him. I want to leave Sam at full-back but I need to work more with Morgan about when he’s needed.

“When I show him video the lines that we run, which side of the hole he needs to be on – he gets it. His English is fine now, he chooses not to understand when it suits him!”

On Sam Tomkins and his omission from the England squad:

“He just wants to get on and play well for Wigan, he seems to have fallen out of favour there but I don’t think he’s stressed about it at all. He just wants to perform for us and that’s great for me.”

On Romain Navarrete who played for the first time this season:

“Apart from that dropped ball he was ok, that was a great carry as well. It was fantastic but it’s no good if you’re going to do that after it. He did ok overall though.”

On his team’s performance:

“I’d be worried if we were killing it in round one but I want us to show improvements and we’re doing that. I thought we looked composed today. I thought we earned the win and were worthy winners. They’re playing well so that makes the win a bit more enjoyable too.”
