Writing in his latest blog, Oliver Gildart says the Wigan players are working as hard as they can to regain their form after their recent run.
Hello everyone, hope you’re all good!
It’s been a tough few weeks for the club as you are all aware.
We lost to Warrington in the Challenge Cup and I was gutted. You don’t get any second chances in the cup so we were all disappointed that we didn’t perform. In the first half we didn’t really touch the ball and Warrington played well to be fair to them. They had so much ball and we couldn’t do anything. We let them play how they wanted to and that’s not good enough from us. When we did have the ball, we were too tight because of all the defending we had been doing so it was a bad day at the office.
We were then defeated 32-16 at Wakefield and we didn’t have the start we wanted again. We were a bit sloppy and we only started playing in the last 15 minutes, we posted a few points but it was just too late then. We probably need our big senior players but the team we put out there was still good enough to win that game so we were disappointed. I thought Mully (Craig Mullen) was very good and I’ve been hoping he could get a shot for a long time so credit to him and hopefully he can get a few more games.
As you all know, Joel Tomkins left the club this week and personally, I’m gutted. I class Joel as a good mate and I owe him a lot, as when I was a young lad coming through the first team he always helped me out with extras in training and stuff like that. He really looked after me, I can’t thank him enough and I’m sad to see him go but we’ll stay in touch. He made a mistake but it’s time we all moved on.
Batty (John Bateman), Lockers (Sean O’Loughlin) and George (George Williams) were all called up to the England Squad this week to face New Zealand at the weekend and I’m made up for them. It’s going to be an unbelievable trip to go to Denver and I’m a bit jealous to be honest! It’s great though for them to go over to America and I’m looking forward to watching them. Their inclusion in the squad means they will miss our game at Castleford on Friday. It’s going to be tough but it’s a chance for other people to come in and perform so it works both ways, as it gives someone an opportunity.
Joe Greenwood joined us this week from Gold Coast Titans and I think he’s a very good signing! I’ve played against him a few times when I was a bit younger and he’s a real handful so I’m looking forward to playing with him soon.
We travel to the KCOM Stadium on Saturday to face Hull FC and I’m expecting a tough game. We’ve had some good encounters with them over the years, especially away, we’ve managed to get a few results there too so hopefully this time we can as well.
It’s a bit frustrating that people are saying we are in a ‘crisis’ – we are second in the league and I know we’ve had three losses in a row but we are still in a very good spot. We haven’t performed as well as would have liked but it happens sometimes in sport. We’re just working as hard as we can to get back on track soon.
Thanks for all your support. See you soon.
