Everything you need to know ahead of Wigan’s third and final 2019 pre-season game against Barrow Raiders.
With less than a week until the start of the BETFRED Super League Season, Wigan Warriors head north to face Championship side Barrow Raiders in their third and final pre-season fixture.
Adrian Lam’s side has an unbeaten record so far in pre-season, seeing off London Skolars and Salford Red Devils last week. The Head Coach’s squad selection shows he will give an opportunity to youngsters and players looking to make their way into the First Team squad.
Adrian Lam names a relatively young squad as Academy players Nathan Wilde and Umyla Hanley both come in to make their first appearances this year.
Here is the squad in full:
Established in 1875, Barrow obviously have a long history in Rugby League. Arguably the most notable day in their history being their Challenge Cup victory during the 1954-55 season.
While they haven’t reached quite those heights in recent years, they have had success. In 2017 they won the now defunct League 1 Cup and secured promotion to Championship after 6 years in League 1.
In their first year back in the second tier of European Rugby League the Raiders finished 10th.

Every player against his own lungs. It’s a new year and new start for Lam and his players as it’s time to put all the hard work from pre-season into test. Whilst there will be opportunities to impress for the young and ‘fringe’ players, the need for full fitness and minutes in the tank is vital.

Things were very different when the two sides met in 2011, with Wigan running out comfortable winners. Meeting in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup, In front of 8,000 fans, the Warriors ran in 9 tries, including doubles for Sam Tomkins and Tommy Leuluai. The final score, 52-0.
Ahead of the game, Lam said: “It’s great that we’ve got these relationships with Clubs such as London Skolars and Barrow Raiders. We’re also going up there to help them in a charitable way so we’re very thankful for the opportunity they’ve produced for us and we’re looking forward to playing in what will, no doubt, be a tough game.”
“We need to clarify on some of the fringe places. The players that have been picked we feel need to play and we’re looking forward to everyone finishing up on pre-season with game time. It’s about giving players the opportunity to show the best of themselves.
“We understand that we need a big squad to get through the long season and this is where these players will have that final opportunity to play well and put their hand up to be seen.”
Admission for this friendly is priced at £15 for adults, £10 for concessions and £5 for children. Fans can pay on arrival to Craven Park.
