Head Coach Adrian Lam previews Friday’s Betfred Super League home game vs Catalans Dragons
“It’ll be a tough game here. Last time we played here we were pretty close to being perfect, so hopefully we can mirror that.” Lam
- Wigan Warriors vs Catalans Dragons, Friday 6th September, DW Stadium, K.O. 7:45pm.
Wigan Warriors Head Coach Adrian Lam says he is preparing his side to face a Catalans Dragons side “at their best” when they visit the DW Stadium on Friday (7:45pm).
Wigan head into this Friday’s game off the back of an important win over Wakefield Trinity last Sunday.
Lam on the victory: “We hadn’t been successful there in a long time and it was a real challenge for us.”
Sunday’s win leaves Wigan sat in second place in the Betfred Super league table with just two games to go.
As his side head into the final two fixtures, Lam explained that he isn’t taking anything for granted. “We’ve got a pretty tough two games coming up in Catalans and Castleford at home, so a lot of work to do, but I’m really pleased for the group so far.”
“We’ve used certain words at certain times of the season, and confidence and belief are the ones we are pushing aggressively at the moment.
“As a group, if we get down to a tight game, they believe in each other and if things get tight in the match over the next couple of weeks, I have total confidence we can get the result we deserve.”
Friday’s opponents Catalans have found things tough of late, picking up one win in their last five games. Despite their recent form, Lam is still expecting a tough challenge.
“They’re a team of talented individuals who can get up for one game. Their team is good enough to bring a performance any week they like, so we are preparing to face them at their best.
“It’ll be a tough game here. Last time we played here we were pretty close to being perfect, so hopefully we can mirror that.”
The 49 year-old also highlighted that while the 42-0 win stands out in his mind, so too does the defeat at the Nou Camp back in May.
“We thought we were going pretty well but they rolled us over quite easily. We had opportunities in that game and in this game we need to take them. We need to be clinical in everything that we do.”
The Head Coach also discussed injury concerns within the Warriors camp: “Liam Marshall has some doubts. He’s come off the training field with a hamstring issue so it’s maybe French coming into that wing position or Hankinson. We need to make a decision.
In other team news, young half-back Harry Smith was named the 19-man squad on Wednesday for only the second time.
On Smith: “As a half-back I’ve been impressed with him during the season in training and in the academy. I’ve been trying to fit him in somewhere along the way but it hasn’t happened. Friday night might be his chance.
Lam explained that due to a number of injuries in the halves, a couple of options are available ahead of Friday’s game.
“Jarrod Sammut is injured, Jake Shorrocks is injured, we’ve got a lot of injuries there. We can also use Hankinson on the wing and keep French on the bench, so Harry’s not a guarantee just yet.”
