Wigan Warriors Women are pleased to announce their captaincy team for the upcoming 2020 Season, which starts with an away trip to local rivals and new recruits to Women’s Super League, Warrington Wolves.
Following the announcement of the new structure and fixtures for the 2020 Betfred Women’s Super League, Head Coach, Kris Ratcliffe has named his captain and vice-captain for the season ahead.
England international, Rachel Thompson, who previously acted as vice-captain, makes the step up to full captaincy for 2020. The influential Warriors centre spoke on her new role: “I’ve enjoyed being vice-captain for the past two years and I’ve learned a lot about the game and myself as a player in that time.
“The step up to captain is a big one, but it’s a challenge that I’m really looking forward to. We’ve got a good set of girls to work with, and I hope that I can bring out the best in each of them, and that we can get back to enjoying our time playing in Cherry and White.”
The newly named captain was positive on Women’s Rugby League in general, as well as in her hopes for the Warriors this year: “It’s been amazing to see how the Women’s game has grown over the past few years and hopefully this year will be bigger and better than ever. The Women’s Super League has become more competitive with each passing year, so I don’t see this year being any different, particularly with the Women’s World Cup on the horizon in 2021.
“Our aim for this year is to get back to being a more determined team. We know what it takes to get to a Grand Final and win it, and we know we have the players and coaching staff to make that happen again, so we won’t be settling for anything less this year. We did it tough in 2019, but we got through it and still made it to a Semi-Final, so we know we can do it.”
Thompson added: “I suppose it’s every little girls’ dream not only to play, but to Captain your home town team, so it feels pretty special.”
Victoria Molyneux will join Thompson in the captaincy team, as she takes on the role of vice-captain for 2020 after a blistering first season for the Warriors, which saw her scoop both Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year in the Women’s end of season awards.
Speaking on her vice-captaincy, Molyneux said: “Being asked to join the captaincy team topped off what was a thoroughly enjoyable season for me. I never expected to have half the success that I have had, and for that I am truly privileged.
“I think the role adds a little more expectancy from me now, both on and off the field. I am looking forward to the challenges that we will face though, I’m looking forward to pushing the team both physically and mentally to be in the running for the title and trying to develop a ‘never give up’ mentality.”
The 32-year-old is also relishing the opportunity to work alongside Thompson in the leadership team: “Myself and Rach will work together and I will support her in any way that I can to make sure that we are genuine contenders against the top teams, where we failed at times last season.
“I’m expecting a lot of hard work this year, but graft that I will enjoy. For the team, I hope that we can be finalists in either the Challenge Cup or Grand Final, but ideally both! I know Rachel will be striving to get back to the final and try and be crowned Women’s Super League Champions once more, having already experienced it in 2018.”
